Day 10 - USA vs. Argentina

Argentina 1 - USA 0 It was a tough game against a very good team that played superb defence and didn't make any mistakes. We had a few really good shots on goal by Scott C, Simon, Brian K but their keeper made some awesome saves and was able to keep it out of the goal. I started at center midfield today an had a dig early in the game from distance that just went over the crossbar. Their goal came on a misdirection play that fell perfectly for their left winger who hit it first time off of the inside of the short post from 18 yards out. Our goalie Rob Z made several excellent saves to keep us in the game until the end. All in all, it was the best we've played as a team we gave it our all. In case you didn't know, Argentina is one of the world's soccer powers and this team will likely play for the gold medal.

Rob Z - 1, our goalie played superbly today making several key saves and cutting off several through balls craftily delivered by the skillful Argentinians. Looks like I have a bit of a fauxhawk going on (Bannickesque).

If you have the C's armband on, you can talk to the referee and tell your teammates where to go. That's David S. - 3 near me but I was actually asking the referee to spot the ball differently.

There's a convention in soccer that if the captain (Jim B. - 4) is substituted off the field, he hands over the armband to another player. Today, Coach Goldie appointed me as the assistant captain, a huge honor considering all of the accomplished men on the team. Thanks Coach, I am extremely honored!

The play was end to end with good action on both sides. Both teams played solid defensively and there were few chances. Brian K - 5, readying like a lion for the next kill while Indy - 10 is backing down his man as the coach demanded.

Mark W - 7 (Wiz) looking on and waiting to get the ball so that he could streak in on goal. Their D bodied us up and it was tough to get the ball in an forward position.

Cap'n Crunch (Jim B. - 4) moving forward. What a warrior he was today playing with severly bruised ribs and a mildly strained neck. Talk about taking one for the team - this man deserves every bit of the captaincy and has lead our team fearlessly.

Organizing up front for a free kick. Scott C - 13 and Gary B deliver them with terrific touch, bend and power. Simon M - 12 had a header in the second half that almost connected.

Ball coming down our way with David A - 19 and Gary B - 14 defending the back line fearlessly. Today's surface was synthetic turf and not as good as those that we are accustomed to in the USA.

Scotty C - 13 serving one into the box trying to set up the first goal that we so desperately wanted.

The pregame lineup, exchange of pennants and handshakes. A lot of English, Spanish and Hebrew. The Argentinians are really a good bunch of guys and had pretty good sportsmanship today.

Pregame pictures in our white uniforms with the goalkeepers in red. From left to right. Back row - Rob Zabronsky, Jeff Kohn, Howard Glancy, Mark Wisnevitz, Scott Kronick, Gary Bernstein, Russel Rosenberg, Eric Brief, Philip Fishel, David Parks, Dan Indech, Scott Cohen, Steven Goldenring. Front row - Abe Rothman, Brian Kronick, David Alhadeff, Stuart Hochberger, David Stone, Simon Mermelstein, Don Kent, James Benjamin. Not pictured, Jared Lans, our awesome team manager. All you guys rock big time for accomplishing this.

The team huddle before the match. We usually shout out "USA" or "TEAM". There's Jared in the blue jersey.

We've arrived at the field and are getting ready for the big match. We so want a win and some goals. A tie doesn't help us and a loss hurts us only in that it forces us to win our final game on Sunday against Brazil to play in the bronze medal game on Tuesday.
