Day 9 - Sightseeing to Jerusalem

The sun has set on another beautiful day in Israel.

Israel has sensational sunsets. On the road home from Jerusalem.

The view of the Judean desert from Hebrew University at Mt. Scopus
A look at the old city from Mount of Olives.

Mount of Olives is also the site of the Jewish burial areas.

A closer look at some of the grave sites.
A beautiful lookout at Mount Olives.

There is still a significant Arab presence in Jerusalem. This photo was taken near the Damascus gate.
A camel up near the lookout.
Looking down the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter in the old city.

The menorah symbolize the Jewish race. Not to confuse this 7 candle candelabra with a Hanukkiah, which has 9 candles.
This is an artist's rendering of the tempe that stood where the Dome of Rock (gold domed Muslim temple) now stands.

The Dome of the Rock up above the Western Wall.

Me, Fish, Z and Mummy posing at the Kotel.

Fish talking to a guy that ended up being the son of a Lubavich rabbi in England the Fish used to be associated with years back. It was a nice coincidence.

In the underchambers beside the Kotel, many people were saying prayers. Here, the men were doing the afternoon service.

Group picture at the Kotel.

Deep in thought and prayer. Put 3 pieces of paper in the wall.
After Fish prayed, he handed over his tallis and tefillin. I doned them and said some prayers. At this, I placed a few pieces of paper in the wall with my personal wishes on them.

Nearing the Kotel (Western Wall of the Temple), we see directions to respect the sanctity of the sight.

Photos at the Kotel.
My first look at the Kotel. It is such an amazing sight. You can never get tired of looking at it.
There's soldiers everywhere here to maintain peace and ward off any terrorism.

The old city walls and excavations preserved over the ages.

A church off in the distance.

The Damascus Gate. There's still a lot of Palestinian presence in this historical city.

Another gate into the old city.

Lunch at one of the local hotels. We ate quickly because we wanted to move onto the Old City.

Our first look at the wall surrounding the Old City.
More memorials - this one for the children.
Memorializing the children lost in the Holocaust.

Another memorial garden. The New Yad Vashem is a phenomenal museum.
The eternal candle, the "Ner Tamid" in a building that they call the tent.

The purpose of this museum is to create a permanent reminder of the horrific events of the Holocaust and to memorialize those lost. We will never forget what happenned and education the future generations of this dark time in history.

The objective of the Yad Vashem spelled out in this poster.

Gathering at the start of the tour.
We've arrived at Yad Vashem and are waiting to receive our headsets. Our guide will give us the tour so that we are really well informed along the way.

A few military helicopters doing excercise above us.

Stopped for drinks and coffee at a rest area along the way.

Heading up to Jerusalem on the bus. Lot of farming and growers along the way. The roads are good as is the traffic flow.
